Yes, we’re now in fantastic France but only just !
We’re visiting the famous village of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Porte , 8 kms from the Spanish border in the Basque hinterland, in the foothills of The Pyrenees.
This charming village is known for being one of the traditional starting points for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela ( the way of Saint James ). It’s on the Roncevaux Pass at the base of the Pyrenean Mountains & the name “Pied de Port” means “ foot pass.”
We admire the romantic Roman bridge & meander up the old town streets following the path of the special Camino shells along the path…..sorry about my elegant foot attire !?
There are queues of pilgrims, some with bikes, eager to collect their special Camino booklet for their stamps along the way. They require the stamps to collect their official certificate at the end of their pilgrimage.
We continue along the beautiful small streets & meet some interesting locals. However Bev’s not that excited about the Madames fashion here !
Many places for the pilgrims to purchase last minute clothing & gear for their adventure! You never know what the weather will do !
Mark is impressed that you can buy a fresh baguette from this vending machine “a toute heure “, at any hour ! He loves his fresh baguette !!
The panoramic views from our walk on the ancient walls of the village below are impressive !
Driving onwards now & snapping a quick pic of this amazing castle as we drive along!
Funny creative roundabouts too, apparently we are now in kiwi fruit country! Ha!
What a beautiful place love the photos quaint.
Lots of pilgrimages !! Memories of beautiful France
❤️
You are certainly having quite an adventure Bev and Mark. Xx
