The MS Rotterdam sails north overnight to Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. Nicknamed the King of the Fjords. Yes, the best fjord was definitely kept to last!! We awaken to find ourselves in paradise at the enchanting village of Skjolden, the highlight of our cruise!!
We excitedly disembark the ship armed with raincoats and umbrellas just in case. Come with us as we explore the picturesque beauty that surrounds us!
This idyllic hamlet is often referred to as the gateway to the kingdom of the fjords.
Sognefjord is the crown jewel of the Norwegian fjords with its sheer magnitude extending over 200 km.
We cross the bridge over the very rapid flowing river on our way up to the steep path to the viewpoint overlooking Sognefjord & also spotting our cruise ship!
Words escape us…..almost!! …..The vista is so spectacular & serene in its beauty.
Trekking back down the track passing waterfalls with the clouds also reflecting onto the
crystal clear waters below.
Passers by insist on taking this postcard picture of us!
The attractive homes are pretty, charming and dollhouse like.
The low-level clouds add a mystic touch to Skjolden.
We check out the friendly, local llamas who wander over for a chat.
Mark points out how thick the insulation in the walls are, on this new build, so I take a close-up to show you.
We search out the local caravan park which has a large grass area for camping, but it is empty today. The huts look interesting, particularly with their grassy rooftops — maybe for insulation too?
This giant hydroelectric generating wheel stands proudly in front of the tourist office.
All the umbrellas are out as we head back to the ship after a wonderful day in the peaceful, scenic village of Skjolden.
How impressive are these enormous bollards securing the ships super thick mooring lines?
your photos and comments always make me feel like I am there with you.
Thank you for including me.

Surely that’s heaven! So different to the Aussie scenery!
Mark & Bev, you’ve captured a fantastic spot.
I appreciate the photos of a place I have never been.
