Apart from the amazing scenery and interesting cultures we observe and enjoy on our Aussie Bruce Adventures, it is the special friendships we have made along the way that enrich our experiences.
Our first week in the Netherlands has been full of special reunions.
Leaving Bruce in Camping de Weidevogel in Boekel, we cycle into the small town of Erp.
Ten years ago, on our Rhine River cruise we met Carla and Sjaak and then three years later we all enjoyed another cruise from Rotterdam. They live behind their florist shop (on the right below) and have a beautiful back garden too.
The Dutch BBQ party was fun as usual. Ron, Anja and Will joined in the laughter too.
Next stop Camping de Muk and another wonderful reunion with Netty, Jan, Maaike and Basil in Beuningen. Eleven years ago we were camping neighbours in picturesque Annecy in France.
In Nijmegen we explore the Bastei Museum learning about the history of town – back to the Roman origins and the effect of the Waal River nearby. 2000 years of history built upon each other. We come face to face with a wooly mammoth skull – that lived here during the ice-age 10,000 years ago.
We celebrate together and share Dutch Bitterballens – a popular meat-based ball shaped snack with mustard and nice beers.
In the local ship there are “swinkels and ………. Aussie shiraz too!
